Bitcoin Runes Explained
Bitcoin Runes are a token standard on Bitcoin created by Casey Rodarmor (the same person behind Ordinals). Runes let you create fungible tokens directly on Bitcoin — think of them as Bitcoin's answer to ERC-20 tokens on Ethereum.
How Runes Work
Runes use Bitcoin's UTXO model and OP_RETURN to store token data. This means rune transactions are lean, efficient, and don't bloat the blockchain like BRC-20 tokens did.
Runes vs BRC-20
BRC-20 tokens used ordinal inscriptions (expensive, slow). Runes use OP_RETURN (cheaper, faster, cleaner). Runes are the evolution — most new Bitcoin tokens in 2026 use the Runes standard.
The SPUNK Rune
SPUNK•BET is our own rune powering the spunk.bet free crypto casino. Players claim 10,000 SPUNK daily from the faucet and use them to play 10 provably fair games. It's a real example of runes in action.
How to Get Runes
- Faucets: Claim free runes daily on spunk.bet
- Marketplaces: Buy on Magic Eden or Unisat
- Etching: Create your own rune (requires BTC for fees)
Why Runes Matter
Runes bring DeFi to Bitcoin without smart contracts. They're fast, cheap, and native to Bitcoin. As Bitcoin L2s grow, runes will become the standard for tokenization on the world's most secure blockchain.
